THE HISTORY OF PICKLEBALL

Pickleball traces its roots back to 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, USA, where Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum created the game to entertain their families during the summer. Combining badminton nets, table tennis bats and a wiffle ball, the three men created the first version of what would go on to become Pickleball.

The name ‘Pickleball’ is said to have come from two potential sources. Joan Pritchard, Joel’s wife, said that she named the game after the ‘pickle boat’ in crew, which is a boat that is made up for the leftover oarsmen from other boats. However, Barney McCallum stated that the name came from the Pritchard’s family dog, Pickles, who chased after stray balls during their early matches.

From its simple beginnings, pickleball rapidly gained popularity locally and spread across the United States and beyond. Its appeal lies in its accessibility, combining elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis into a game suitable for all ages and skill levels.

Today, pickleball is a global phenomenon, with enthusiasts and clubs found worldwide, including in the United Kingdom. Whether played for fun, fitness, or competition, pickleball continues to unite people, fostering friendships and a shared passion for the sport.
